Julian Burton
Artist and visual facilitator
Julian Burton is an artist and consultant who specialises in "Visual Dialogue", an engagement process that uses visual art, metaphor, story and
dialogue to support leaders to communicate their "Compelling Case for Change" in a way that has impact and meaning for staff. It equips leaders and managers to explain their strategy in clear and simple language in small
local conversations. This process can generate the sort of meaningful and honest discussion that build relationships and change behaviours.
At the heart of this process is "The Big Picture"; a very large watercolour painting of the story they want to tell. It is then used it to open a space for inquiry and dialogue and engage staff in creating shared meaning and
purpose. A simple and coherent story makes the change tangible, so people can see themselves in it and how they fit into the big picture, creating a story can explain the need to change and help people see new possibilities for the future.
Julian has worked extensively in the UK and within a diverse range of industries including retailing, oil, public sector and the financial
industries.
He has a varied background in illustration, website design, and Organisational Development. He is a member of SOL-UK and the L.S.E.
Complexity Research Group.
Julian has a particular interest in the role of symbols; words and pictures, in leadership organisational change, particularly how words affect the emotions, and hence levels of motivation and the successful co-ordination of
action.
Current clients include BAE Systems, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Barclays, AON,
MOD, NHS, Lewisham Council, Shell, BT, Prudential.
